Tajik Linear Measures of Length Referring to the End of the XVIII-th - the Beginning of the XX-th Centuries

Avtors

Kholov Mahmudjon Sharipovich

Abstract

In his article the author considers the Tajik measures of length referring to the period of the XVIII-th – the beginning of the XX-th centuries, the system of their formation, multiple and submultiple units. It is asserted that metrology of Central Asian people, Tajiks inclusive, is scantily studied, and there are almost no works exploring the period under consideration. The author of the article adduces information concerned with Tajiks` metrology extracted out of both Russian and Eastern explorers` works. Diversity and distinctions of Tajiks measures of length referring to the period researched are demonstrated. It is indicated that the system of Tajik measures of length consisted of the following notions: angousht (finger), vajab (span), pai (foot), gaz (elbow), qadam (step) and farsang (mile); names and sizes of the above-mentioned elements are connected with the names of the parts of a human body.
