The article dwells on theoretical and applied problems of compiling encyclopedias; their branch varieties being of special importance. It is asserted that the works on compilation of encyclopedias unfolded widely in Tajikistan in the XX-th century, however, in Persian-Tajik lexicography the formers have historic roots traced back to ancient and middle periods of Tajik language evolution. The authors applied efforts to elicitation of common features between philological dictionaries and encyclopedias. At the same time they underscore that the formers possess specific peculiarities of their own too, first of all, it is evinced in a selection of dictionary material and modes of the latter`s interpretation. The greater part of lexical material of encyclopedias presents proper names which, according to the rules, should not be placed into interpreting or bilingual dictionaries, as the goal of encyclopedias lies in providing a minimum of precise and authentic data based on primary originals in order interpretation were done only in connection with this or that concrete notion.
