Abstract

The article dwells on the role of of Zoroastrian temples in the formation of toponyms of ancient Sughd because toponymy is associated not only with geography, but with material culture either. One of its signs is an existence of architectural monuments, including fortresses, barrows, temples, mosques and their influence over a formation of geographical names. This historical process began in the ancient period. Among these architectural monuments, objects of religion - temples, mosques - have a great status. In the pre-Islamic period, when Zoroastrian religion was widespread its sanctuaries led to an emergence of new settlements and, in turn to a development of toponyms. These place names are created in Sughdian language.
