Abstract

The article is devoted to the analysis of the smallest notional units of thThe article is devoted to the analysis of the smallest notional units of the language, that of morpheme and its types in the morphological system of English and Tajik languages. According to the classification of morphemes word building morphemes change the lexical meaning of the word  while grammatical morphemes are able to enlarge grammatical meaning. Ones of the components of morphemes, those of affixes, in the morphological system of English and Tajik languages are used to build new words and to develop variety forms of the same word. The quantity of multifunctioning morphemes in the Tajik language exceeds the one of multifunctioning morphemes of the English language. In English language there are classified inflectional and derivational morphemes and in the Tajik language morphemes are divided into root and auxiliary ones. Root morphemes are an obligatory element of the word, while auxiliary morphemes consist of suffixes, prefixes and affixes. In both languages there functions a zero morpheme which is not phonetically expressed.
