Abstract

This article examines the semantic nuances of the -in/-gin suffix using prose works from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as used by authors of that period. The analyzed examples, related to the grammatical features of this suffix, are selected from three works of that period: "Tarihi Khumoyun" by Muhammad Sodikhodzhi Gulshani, "Ruznomai Safari Iskandarkul" by Abdurrahmon Mustadzhiri Samarqandi, and "Tukhfai Shokhi" by Mirzoabdulazimi Somii Bustoni. Based on an analysis of the factual material, it was concluded that in most cases, the suffix -in is attached to concrete (material) nouns and forms relative adjectives. Further research and comparison revealed that the semantic functions of this suffix are not uniform and are used to express various meanings, such as tool and material, time and order, direction and place, resemblance and similarity, and others. According to the author of the article, one of the important properties of the suffix -in is its word-forming and meaning-creating function. This grammatical element of language most often applies to nouns, numerals, and adverbs.
