This article examines the history of the library network in Central Asia in the second half of the XIX-th and early XX-th centuries. It is based on a comprehensive approach, incorporating historical genetic, historical comparative, and historical bibliological methods. The aim of the work is to study the development of librarianship after the conquest of the region by the Russian Empire. This article examines the first public, garrison, and academic libraries, their role in spreading education in Central Asia, and the influence of the Russian administration on the region's cultural life, book collections, and readership during this period. Emphasis is placed on the educational mission of libraries and their role in meeting cultural needs, using the examples of the Behbudiya Library in Samarkand and the Ma’rifat Library in Bukhara. It is concluded that the establishment of the first public libraries in the Turkestan region and the Bukhara Emirate contributed to the spread of literacy and education among the local population and settlers.
