The author of the article analyzes the lexis designating the names of weapon, military ammunition and siege guns in Nizami Gyandjavi’s “Hamse” (Pentateuch). She underscores the interconnection between the plot of the poem and the lexis used in it. In love poems, e.g., in “Leili and Medjnun” and “Husrav and Shirin” military vocabulary occurs comparatively rarely, whereas in “Iskandarnoma” it is used more often. In Nizami’s poems there are used the names of weapons which pertain mostly to primordially Tajik (durbosh, dashna) and Arabic (synon, khandjar) languages. But in the names of guns occurring in “Hamse” the reader runs into the word “manjanik”, being of Greek origin it, probably, penetrated into Tajik through Arabic. Proceeding from the etymological analysis carried out in commentaries to the mediaeval interpretation dictionary “Burhoni Kote’” by Iranian scholar Mukhammad Muin, it is noted that the word “manjanik” is erroneously presented by the compilers of the interpreting “Dictionary of the Tajik Language” as a primordially Tajik one.
