The article attempts to analyze some of the most important aspects of the semantic nuances and features of the use of the union "agar" in the written monuments of Tajik literature of the X-XIII centuries and in the works of modern writers who remained outside the field of view of researchers. It is noted that although there are numerous studies on the meaning and functions of conditional unions and their structure, this problem cannot be considered fully resolved. It is emphasized that in terms of structure, complex sentences with conditional clauses with the union "agar" in the monuments of the X-XIII centuries have no fundamental differences with the same sentences in the modern literary Tajik language. An analysis of the illustrative material allows us to conclude that the features of the use and semantic shades of the union "agar" in the periods of language development, taken for comparison, are not similar. In the monuments of the X-XIII centuries the union "agar" had a wider use than in the modern Tajik literary language.
