The article analyzes the etymological comments and explanations of lexical items in the medieval dictionary “Bahori Ajam” by Roy Tekchand Bahor. Based on material collected from the three-volume dictionary, the author of Bahori Ajam's thoughts on the origin of words and individual phrases are examined, and the degree to which they correspond to the opinions of modern researchers is revealed. It is noted that Roy Tekchand, in the process of analyzing the material, sometimes pays attention to the history of the origin of words, sometimes indicates the linguistic affiliation of lexical elements, and sometimes analyzes the evolution of the form of words. It is emphasized that in “Bahori Ajam”, in comparison with other medieval explanatory dictionaries written on the Indian subcontinent, the majority of words are native Indian words.It is concluded that Roy Tekchand Bahor pays special attention to the etymology of phraseological units. He presents interesting insights into the origins of phraseological units based on real-life incidents and events.
