This article is devoted to historiographical analysis of the research of the number of medresas of Eastern Bukhara at the end of XIX-th and the beginning of XX-th centuries. It is stated that madrase functioned almost in all towns and big settlements of the eastern part of Bukhara emirate. The program and teaching course was the same as in Buchara and Turkestan medrese. Characteristic feature of traditional system of education of the XX century was that, it was not ruled by state. The affair of education of all level of population ran by spiritual people, various charities and private persons. On the basis of istiographic analysis the author confirms that the level of literacy of local people was rather high than 2,5% as it was fixed in Russian post-revolution and Soviet istiograpers
