The article dwells on semantic motivation of phraseologisms in English and Tajik languages. There are adduced basic structural-grammatical types of word-combinations. It is underscored that phraseological units include a considerably wide semantic range; herewith, a special part of this type consists of terms; the meaning of the latters` components being not limited. Among them there are proverbs, phrasemes of euphemistic character, similes, phrasemes referred to belles-letters images or those ones which appeared due to certain historic events, customs and legends. Structural, semantic and functional-stylistic analysis of the enumerated lexico-thematic groups shows how rich and variegated the potentialities of thematic groups of PhUs are in the correlated languages.
