The article discusses the semantic features and isomorphic and allomorphic properties of the English modal verb can and its Tajik equivalent tavonistan. Modal verbs are a system of auxiliary verbs that express various connotation of modal meanings. They have their own characteristic features in semantics, usage and grammatical forms. The article reveals more differences in the meaning of the modal verbs can and tavonistan. Modal verbs of both languages serve to express the modal meanings of other verbs, and for this reason, they are always accompanied by a notional verb or link-verb, and together they perform the syntactic function of a predicate. Despite being equivalent to can, the verb tavonistan has different grammatical forms. It conjugates according to persons and number. It has flectional tense and aspect forms which are reflected in the article with examples.
