Abstract

This article explores one of the key principles of literary criticism—the principle of "justice and conscience," which underlies the treatise "al-Wisatu bayn al-Mutannabi wa Khusumihi" by the Arabic-language Persian-Tajik critic Qazi Gurgani. The work examines the critical methods and techniques used by Qazi Gurgani, as well as their influence on both the literary critical works of his era and the contemporary tradition.Particular attention is paid to understanding the principle of "justice and conscience" in the context of literary criticism. In this regard, selected critical judgments by Qazi Gurgani, expressed in the bayts of Arabic-language Persian-Tajik poets, are presented. The author emphasizes that a critic must possess inner peace and psychological stability, otherwise their judgment can be distorted by envy, hatred, and prejudice. Without spiritual balance, the positive becomes the negative, and virtues become flaws. Thus, failure to adhere to the principle of "justice and conscience" and subordination to personal passions and desires leads to the loss of the true meaning of literary criticism, resulting in "nothing left in literature but isolated lines."
