The article analyzes the methods of interpreting lexical elements in historical sources written in the Tajik language and in translated historical chronicles of the 10th-13th centuries. Based on material collected from eight historical sources, the article examines ways of interpreting the meanings of words and expressions related to various languages, presented by the authors of the aforementioned historical chronicles, which native speakers did not understand for one reason or another. As a result of comparing the materials of the studied historical sources, it was concluded that, in total, historical works offered an interpretation of 89 lexical units, carried out in three different ways. It is emphasized that the largest number of interpreted lexical elements is found in “Tarihi Tabari” and “Zain-ul-akhbor”, and the smallest number is found in “Gurar-as-siyar” of Saolibi and “Tarihi Bukhoro”.
